Absolutely great class last night at Essex Fighting Arts in Orsett Village Hall. Only a few of us, but we were able to really hone the skills that we have been training from Bob Breen’s 4D combat. I have been chatting to Bob and getting pointers as I have been drilling these techniques in and it is making so much sense now. I have been training / studying for many years and this new direction completely slots in to all that I have studied and is so effective. Even the analogies of a boy in a field floating a balloon just describes what you’re doing so well. Bruce Lee used to talk about an exhibition and I have lived by this for many years watching big fancy moves, which may look great but useless in a real situation so what’s the point? 4D combat takes this theory to a whole new level and completely sucks your opponent into your spiders web and not seeing the boy in the field floating a balloon who is really an IED (Bob’s words). The guys were drilling these concepts in nicely but I see this similar to when I studied the science of road racing (Keith Code’s Twist of the Wrist and he talks about having $100 and when you first start you are spending $99 of this on your attention leaving no more to spend on other things such as points of reference etc… Well this was no different as the guys were spending so much of the $100 on stopping the hits that they had not a lot left for their strikes and directional movements etc… BUT the more they did it and drilled in these concepts, the more of the $100 they had to spend on other techniques and the more they relaxed. Less chaos as Bob would say! Once you are able to relax, it gives you much more time to strike, slap, disrupt and throw off balance etc… Becomes a bit of a game, but important not to stay in one game for too long and more 3 beats and then change the game. i.e. when the slaps and eye wipes were hitting their target 9 times out of 10, I would change the game because they were expecting them and used throat jabs, rising elbows, clench and shoulder barges, foot traps and more. Then it starts to open more doors to all that I have learned over the years in the Filipino fighting arts and all that I have taught my students. Bloody brilliant! Still much more to study and learn from Bob as he is the man, but loving this new addition and direction and so are the guys!
